Zoe's Place of Greytown.

Greytown...food, wine and tourists

For a lot of people Greytown has always been known for its berry fruit and apple orchards. Changes in climatic conditions, national and international demand factors, and the increasing pressure for more residential land has had a noticeable impact on the number of growers still involved. The Wairarapa region, in particular Martinborough, has developed a new focus- wine and olive oil. Wine tourism has also helped develop a new breed of restaurant owners, retailers and event promoters.

Our close proximity to Wellington has proved to be more than just a convenience. Wellingtonians appreciate the quality of the wines and produce grown in the region. A trip 'over the hill' is regarded by many as a significant transformation from their normal environment and therefore a welcome break from their normal routine.

The Real Thing

At Zoe's Place we have attempted to reconnect with the fertile soils, unlike the current trend towards atmospherically controlled growing environments (glasshouses). We accept that 'mother nature' is not always attuned to market demand and therefore can provide all sorts of challenges for those working the land. However we have a belief that produce grown outdoors has different taste and health characteristics compared with those grown in an artificially controlled environment. We have embraced the principles of organic cultivation. Further more we have opted to use heirloom seeds rather than the hybrid variety. Our aim is to produce taster and healthier foods.

Nothing beats gathering and cooking vegetables fresh from the garden. At Zoe's Garden we pick the produce you, the consumer, wants to buy. Unlike the traditional method where the produce is picked and distributed through a national network of supermarkets on the basis that there is consumer demand- today, tomorrow, perhaps the next day. At Zoe's Garden we communicate directly with our customers and advice them what produce is currently in season and available. Their order is transmitted electronically to us and the required items picked to order. These orders are then delivered directly to the customer.

In 2009 we would like to have sufficient produce to enable us to participate in the Farmers market in Masterton. Farmers markets have become synonymous with local foods. The markets are a great venue for the growers and consumers to get together and communicate about local produce. These markets are successful because they satisfy a local need.

Keeping it Fresh

However, we believe that access to fresh produce should be the norm. More importantly we believe that fresh produce provides the nutrition for good health in today's world where food convenience promotes takeaway foods and the value of fresh vegetables has been overlooked.

If you are interest in knowing more about the services we offer then give us a call or drop us a note. Zoe's Garden currently has a database of consumers who regularly buy their produce on-line. If you too are concerned about how your food is grown, where it comes from and how old it is when you take it home then we think you will enjoy what we have to offer.
